149 Miles Closer to the Atlantic

Over the last two days, in glorious weather, Mike has ridden a total of 149 miles.

Yesterday's ride was 77 miles and we camped last night in a beautiful campground in Ferne Clyffe, Illinois. A segment of the ride was on top of a levee and it was amazing. We were the only ones traveling on it and we were surrounded by beautiful reflecting waters and bright yellow flowers.

During the day I had complained to Mike that I hadn't seen any cows along the way for a while. Shortly after I had complained I happend upon these lovely beauties!

I had blocked the owners drive way (dirt road) in order to photograph them and the owner happend to pull up. She rolled down her window and said, those are Ankol Watusi's which my husband picked up at an African farm animal auction. I told her I thought they were amazing and it's not something you see in California, she said, it's not something you'll see again in Southern Illinois either! She commented that they were sweethearts so I didnt fear getting too close.

The campground was very peaceful and lush. There were only 3 or 4 other campers (I guess camping on a Monday night isn't real popular in southern Illinois). We woke up to another amazing sunrise and clear skies!

Today Mike rode 62 miles. Most of the ride was through rolling hilss of farmland. We thought we were going to have to camp tonight also, but we found an awesome lodge up on the hillside in Cave-In-Rock, Illinois. Our room is huge and has a balcony that overlooks the Ohio River.

Tomorrow our day will begin with a ferry ride across the Ohio River into Kentucky. The river is high right now and there are many flooded areas. There was concern that the ferry would be running due to high waters, but we saw today it was running. We will be camping again tomorrow so no blog update for a couple of days again.

Mike met two other riders today traveling the trans-America route (which is from Virginia to Oregon). Check out their journey at www.teamcompassion09.com.
