Over the river and through the woods to Illinois we go!
Today was a much less dramatic day than yesterday. Some light rain this morning then clearing to blue skies. Much of our travels today felt like a tour of destruction as we rode through what felt like the path of yesterdays tornado(s). Trees down everywhere and roofs blown off of many buildings.
Mike rode 61 miles today and after crossing the Mississippi River, we are now in State number 7, Illinois! We are now in Chester, Illinois which is famous because it is the birth place of the creator of Popeye (I know you are all really jealous now)!
This town was actually hit pretty good by yesterday's storm as well. When we arrived and attempted to make hotel reservations there were no rooms available anywhere in town. Apparently all of the electrical repair service people stay in the hotel here as well as many local residents who are still without power. Mike schmoozed them at the front desk with his likable ways and 20 minutes later we got a call that there had been a cancellation for a downstairs, king, non-smoking room!
We like it here and have decided to take a very much needed day of rest, so we will be staying here tomorrow night also. We will probably spend some time exploring the Mississippi River as well as a covered bridge just outside of town.
I decided not to photograph the destruction of yesterday's tornado and focus on softer things today. The farmland was so beautiful when the sun came out today.
Sorry, no cows today!
