Our last night in Kentucky!

38.4 miles and we will be in Virginia (our final state)! If all goes as planned we'll be in Virginia for lunch. (Maybe I'll be brave and order the chef salad.)

Currently (accourding to Map Source software) we only have 727.8 miles left! And if he weather cooperates we should reach goal in approximately 10 days.

Mike rode 72.5 miles today. The Appalachians are very steep and very narrow roads. Much of our travels today were on busier roads than we have been use to.

The weather was much like yesterday, cold and foggy in the morning then opening up to a bright and sunny day. During Mikes travels today he needed to do a little bike maintenance. He had to stop and replace the chain on the bike. With just over 700 miles left and a new chain he's well prepared to finish it up!

We are running into more and more riders the further east we get. Today we met up with Paul Link. He started in Virginia 12 days ago. He's riding alone, however his wife is supporting him through Kentucky by car, then he will be on his own to Oregon. He said that each night he and 4 other riders seem to end up at the same place to stay or camp. As we moved on to our destination, we saw the 4 other riders, one set of two and two solo riders. The mountainous roads prevented us from chatting with them. It sounds like we will be meeting up with a group of 14 who are on an Adventure Cycling tour headed west.

I have to apologize, in yesterday's blog I mentioned we met up with Diane and Heather, it was actually Diane and Ashley! Sorry Ashley!! (I have no idea where I got Heather from).

This portion of Kentucky doesn't seem to be as scenic as western Kentucky and the homesteads are definitely not the same. The area appears to be very depressed. Many run down homes and trailers. Some very small farms which you could see are not maintained by the high tech machinery that the farms further west are. There is actually a disturbing amount of Confederate flags flying in front of homes and on cars as well as a couple flags with the swastika. We were surprised by the openness of it all. It makes me sad when I see evidence that it even exists.

There were no cows to photograph today, however one thing I love about Kentucky, the roads are lined with daisies (my favorite flower).
