82.2 Miles into Kentucky!

Today Mike rode into State number 8! We are in Kentucky.

We were a little discouraged this morning when we woke up to rain once again, however it stopped before we actually left and the day stayed dry. As the day brightened up, so did our moods. It was however, very hot, windy and humid. Mike said it was like riding into a blow dryer.

In spite of the winds he managed to ride 82.2 miles to Utica, Kentucky. We started out this morning taking a ferry across the Ohio River. The river was only about foot and a half away from reaching a point where they aren't able to operate the ferry because the water covers the road on the Kentucky side. We asked if that has happened in the past and the response was "only several times a year, every year". So we figured they knew what they were doing and boarded the ferry.

What we've seen of Kentucky so far has been really beautiful. Rolling hills and miles of fields. I also noticed that Kentucky still has full service gas stations, they even wash the windshields. I happen to notice one thing while I was pumping my own gas, those waiting in line for the full service, all had cigarettes hanging from their mouths. Is that why they prefer full service? They don't have to put them out? I pumped my gas quickly and got out of there just in case someones ash dropped.

I was feeling adventurous again today and ordered a chef salad. If you recall, in Kansas my chef salad came piled high with fried chicken. In Kentucky it's much different, here they treat it like a bad pizza and cover the salad with all the left over canned vegetables you'd normally find on a pizza; canned mushrooms, green olives, black olives, peppers as well as pepperoni, Canadian bacon and mozzarella cheese. I can't wait to see what's on the chef salad in Virginia!

Another observation, apparently the goats here don't bother grazing, they just hop on the riding mower to take care of business.

We ran across some graffiti today also, I guess you can't escape it, even in the hills of Kentucky.

And of course, the cow of the day (and friend).
