Today Mike rode another 72 miles and we are in our final state of the tour, Virginia!
He has ridden a total of 2,846.62 miles with 584.2 miles remaining. (For those of you following along closely, Mike's math was off yesterday.)
Once again the steeps were steep and long today through the Appalachians, but Mike seems to cut through the hills now with ease (OK, maybe not ease, let's say with less pain than the Rockies and the Ozarks).
We passed 21 east bound riders today. There was one group of 14 who were on a tour with Adventure Cycling Association and were spread out a little, and then we passed a few others either traveling with a partner or solo. They all enjoy taking a break to share experiences that they've had along the way.
The number one story seems to be about the dogs who love to chase riders. Some carry whistles and some carry pepper spray. Mike has had quite a few chases along the way, but no bad incidents. It sounds like most of the riders fear hitting the dogs more than being bitten.
We went through coal mining country today and the only challenge with that is staying out of the coal hauling Mack trucks path. It's much easier for them to get by Mike than it is me, so I felt like I was being chased by Mack trucks up and down narrow windy roads all morning and looking for turn outs and parking lots to get out of their way!
Virginia, like Kentucky, is very lush and green. The areas we drove through today are beautiful and did not appear to be as depressed as eastern Kentucky.
